See animals from around the world, stroll through lush gardens, and join in fun and informative programs at the free Lincoln Park Zoo, surrounded by the breathtaking Chicago skyline. Since 1868 — with the gift of two pairs of swans from New York City’s Central Park — the popular zoo has given visitors the chance to get up close to wildlife in the heart of the city.
Meet the animals
Take a self-guided tour of the habitats of more than 170 species spread over 49 acres, from tiny dwarf mongooses and Madagascar hissing cockroaches to leggy, long-necked giraffes and endangered eastern black rhinos. See snow leopards, green tree pythons, and western lowland gorillas in their unique habitats. Watch polar bears swim at Walter Family Arctic Tundra and observe majestic African lions at Pepper Family Wildlife Center. Laugh at the antics of playful meerkats, spy a rattlesnake, and admire the stunning colors of birds like the blue-bellied roller and golden-breasted starling.
Want to help care for some zoo residents? Visit Farm-in-the-Zoo to feed a chicken or a cow. Have you ever been in a penguin habitat? Sign up for a Malott Family Penguin Encounter, which includes a behind-the-scenes tour and a chance to be greeted by the African penguins in their habitat.
Discover the gardens
While wandering along pathways from one animal habitat to the next, check out the beautiful landscaping of perennials, shrubs, and trees. The zoo is home to more than 850 plant species, including the country’s only accredited perennial herbaceous hibiscus collection. See diverse plants in several garden areas throughout the zoo and track what you see with the zoo’s Garden Explorer. Hear an expert talk about the plants and their history by attending a free guided tour with a horticulturist on Second Saturdays throughout the summer.
Join in zoo events
Check the zoo’s calendar for exciting special events. Youth programs include age-specific choices from camps to internships to field trips. Bring the entire family to the annual Fall Fest celebration and see holiday displays aglow during ZooLights. The 21-plus crowd can enjoy an evening on the town during the Adults Night Out series or Craft Brews at the Zoo!
