Built in 1854, Oak Wood Cemetery is the most historically significant cemetery on the south side of Chicago. Renowned Chicago mayors, Olympian Jesse Owens, Civil Rights activist Ida B. Wells, and physicist Enrico Fermi are buried there. Additionally, six thousand Confederate soldiers, prisoners of war who died at Camp Douglas, are buried together beneath a towering monument.
