Former Residence of Surgeon Daniel “Dr Dan” Hale Williams
Surgeon Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (1858 -1931) founded Provident Hospital, the first hospital in America established and fully controlled by blacks. He also established training programs and organizations to benefit black nurses and physicians. His efforts led to the opening of schools and hospitals in over 30 cities. “Dr. Dan” lived at 445 East 42nd St. from 1905-1929.
