Berghoff Restaurant

The Berghoff Restaurant is an iconic Chicago classic, serving German-American style cuisine and history since 1898. With traditional Berghoff dishes, contemporary American fare, seasonal menus, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options, there is truly something for everyone.

Inside this historic institution, you can find freshly baked bread from their in-house bakery, a lively main floor dining room and Adams Street Brewery.

As one of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is currently owned and operated by Peter Berghoff. Peter’s great-grandfather and founder, Herman J. Berghoff, opened the Berghoff’s doors in 1898, serving free corned beef sandwiches with the purchase of a stein of Berghoff Beer. During Prohibition, the establishment transitioned into a full-service restaurant and served the now-famous Berghoff Root Beer, Near Beer, and Bergo Soft Drinks.

Post Prohibition Herman acquired the city’s first liquor license, which you can find proudly on display behind their centuries-old bar.
