Women & Children First Presents: Gretchen Sisson in conversation with Jessamine Chan
Women & Children First Bookstore is celebrating the release of Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood by sociologist Gretchen Sisson. Gretchen will be joined in conversation by Jessamine Chan, New York Times bestselling author of The School for Good Mothers.
Gretchen and Jessamine will led a timely, powerful conversation about adoption in the United States, specifically exploring Gretchen’s decades-long research on mothers who decided to relinquish their children for domestic adoption, followed by audience Q&A and book signing.
Gretchen Sisson, Ph.D., is a qualitative sociologist studying abortion and adoption at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at University of California, San Francisco. Her research was cited in the Supreme Court’s dissent in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and has been covered in The Washington Post, The Nation, All Things Considered and Consider This, New York Magazine, VOX, and other outlets.
Jessamine Chan is the author of The School for Good Mothers, which was a New York Times bestseller, a Read with Jenna/TODAY Show Book Club pick, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize, and one of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2022. Translations in twenty languages have been published or are forthcoming. She lives in Chicago with her family.
