Tea Time Concert: Tomoko Kashiwagi & Daphne Capparelli Gerling
Hailed by The Strad magazine for their “enterprising” programming, violist Daphne Gerling and pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi offer selections from their album Encircling as well as a preview of their newest project Histórias Latinas. The recital will feature sonatas by Venezuelan composer Modesta Bor, British composer K. Dorothy Fox, and French composer Marcelle Soulage.

Daphne Gerling enjoys an active career teaching, performing, and writing about the viola. Praised by the Strad for her “enterprising programming,” her debut recording “Encircling” was released on Acis in 2024, and has been broadcast on Chicago, Iowa, and Minnesota Public radio. From Amsterdam to Vietnam, and New Zealand to Costa Rica, Daphne’s travels and performances have taken her to 38 universities around the United States, and to 14 countries overseas. In recent years she has been a summer fellow at Lincoln Center Education in New York, and enjoyed performing on baroque viola with the Washington Bach Consort. With pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi she has toured venues throughout Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, and Canada, and presented featured recitals at the International Viola Congresses in Thailand and Brazil. She is Assistant Professor of Viola at the University of North Texas, and President-Elect of the American Viola Society. Her website is www.daphnegerling.com.
Pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi finds immense joy in playing the diverse repertoire she encounters as a performer and as an educator. Kashiwagi completed her studies at Indiana University, and later received the first Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano awarded by the University of Texas at Austin. She has performed throughout the United States, Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Panama, and Canada in such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Central Conservatory in Beijing, and Guildhall School in London. Kashiwagi holds the the Emily J. McAllister Endowed Chair in Piano at the University of Arkansas- Fayetteville and serves as the founding artistic director of Chamber Music of the Ozarks, an organization committed to uniting people through the transformative power of chamber music experiences.
