Sightline: The Seldoms with Fraser Taylor

A new dance work with stunning visuals by influential Scottish artist, Fraser Taylor. May 1-4 at the historic Ruth Page Center for the Arts.

For its 22nd Season, Chicago dance company The Seldoms collaborate again with Fraser Taylor on Sightline, an evening-length work combining dance, visual art, and fashion design. The performance runs one hour without intermission.

In Sightline, figures skirt and fleet in and out of view, drawing attention to how we see one another in our worlds. The Seldoms’ ensemble of six extraordinary dancers move in and around Fraser Taylor’s striking set—twelve column-like vertical textiles—creating situations of concealment and surprise.  The figures themselves, along with the figuration in Taylor’s set and geometric garments from his HAXTON Studio, create a dynamic terrain of marks, memories, and exchanges.

Sightline choreographer and The Seldoms’ Artistic Director, Carrie Hanson, and Taylor have previously collaborated on several of the company’s signature projects, including Marchland(2010), a commission from the Museum of Contemporary Art that was called “drop dead gorgeous” by the Chicago Tribune, and “Toolbox”, a cross-disciplinary dialogue project that was conceived in 2017 over a week-long residency in Glasgow and more recently the centerpiece of a 2022 exhibit at the Hyde Park Art Center.
