Requiem for Water

Malhaar: A Requiem for Water represents composer Reena Esmail’s hope that humankind will improve its relationship to the earth and “beckon the rain back”. Performed by members of the New Earth Ensemblealongside tabla player Kalyan Pathak, Hindustani vocalist Jai Sovani, and (Western) percussionist John Corkill, this work combines texts from the traditional Latin Requiem mass, environmental writers, and traditional Hindi to explore the beauty and awe of water and humans’ relationship with it.
