Àkójọpọ̀ Presents: Drum Call West African Folklore and Music
Join us for an interactive afternoon as we dive into West African folklore through music, drumming, and song. In The Drum’s Call: West African Folklore and Music, we’ll explore Udara Mu Cha, the story of a young girl who finds solace and sustenance from a mythical tree when neglected by her caregivers.
Attendees will have the opportunity to choose between two interactive options. In the vocal melody portion, Chiemerie Obianom, a vocalist with roots in Nigerian music, will teach the melodic and narrative techniques that bring the story’s message to life through song. Meanwhile, Victoria Boateng, an accomplished djembe teacher and autism advocate, will lead the drumming rhythm group, teaching rhythmic patterns that embody the spirit and emotion of the tale.
The event will culminate in a mini-performance, where participants will come together to share what they’ve learned, creating a moment of unity and celebration. This family-friendly event welcomes all ages and skill levels—no previous experience is required. Join us for an afternoon of music, culture, and community!
