The Discover NHL Winter Classic is an eagerly anticipated, annual tradition that celebrates hockey’s outdoor heritage while embracing innovation and fan engagement. Chicago is thrilled to have been selected to host the event at our iconic Wrigley Field this New Year’s Eve. The first Winter Classic was held on New Year’s Day, 2008 with the Buffalo Sabres playing the Pittsburgh Penguins at the home of the NFL Buffalo Bills. The combination of nostalgia and an outdoor setting captivated fans and players alike. Chicago hosted the second NHL Winter Classic in 2009 with an epic match-up between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings also at Wrigley Field where nearly 41,000 fans braved the cold on New Year’s Day.
